2010-03-08: Mayor Masondo outraged over attack on emergency staff

Johannesburg's Executive Mayor, Clr Amos Masondo, has expressed his outrage at the weekend attack on two paramedics who responded to an emergency call in the Durban Deep area.

Mayor Masondo is "deeply concerned that the two women were attacked by thugs while attending to an injured toddler."

"This is the work of criminals with no concern for human lives or the important role that emergency personnel play in caring for the community.

"We are outraged and revolted by this incident and the City will work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and punished," he says.

The City will ensure that the victims of the attack receive quality medical treatment and appropriate counselling.

Mayor Masondo expressed his "sincere appreciation" to the City's emergency workers who have to perform their duties, often under very dire circumstances.

"We have a world class Emergency Services as again displayed recently when Johannesburg members played a prominent role in the search for and treatment of survivors of the Haiti earthquake," says Mayor Masondo.
