2010-03-11: Johannesburg Water celebrate National Water Week

Johannesburg Water (JW) will be celebrating the National Water Week from the 15 to 21 March 2010. The event is celebrated annually often to coincide with World Water Day and the theme for 2010 is “together we can save more water”. JW is excited about this year’s event as this will be the 10th year the entity participates to demonstrate its continuous support for this initiative by the Department of Water Affairs.

As part of our celebration and participation, JW will embark on a public education campaign across the City of Johannesburg with the primary objective of highlighting and profiling key issues affecting the state of water and sanitation across the city. The campaign will seek to continue educating and raising awareness within the broader residents of the city. This awareness is coupled with the responsibility that every resident should take in ensuring the integrity of our water resources and its efficient use.

Water is a precious and yet finite resource. Projections from experts point to the fact that, demand on water resource will continue to increase at a fast pace in the coming decades with Africa, the Middle East, Central and Eastern Asia being the most affected. It is with this background that, the 2010 campaign aims to ensure efficient and responsible use of water by all stakeholders from all spheres of life such as communities, commercial and other related industries. This will assist in meeting the economic growth targets, not just for the city, but the entire country by ensuring that every citizen has access to this precious resource and cater for future generations.

As the entity responsible for water and sanitation across the city, we have identified the following areas as the focal points to educate and raise awareness on water conservation:

  • 15th March- Eastbank Ultrek Community Hall in Alexandra
  • 17th March- Orange Farm Multipurpose Centre in Orange Farm
  • 19th March- Rabie Ridge Community Hall in Midrand
  • 21st March- Joubert Park in Central Johannesburg.

Planned activities for the week long celebrations at the above venues will include public education on water conservation, the role of JW in the city, distinction between JW and other water entities/authorities, create a platform to report service delivery challenges in their areas and the importance of community participation in water conservation activities, to name a few. As we all celebrate the National Water Week we appeal to residents to take note of the following tips:

  • Verify that your home is water leak and read your meter regularly; many homes have hidden water leaks. Close all the taps to make sure there is no running water, check if your meter is still running, and if it’s running there is a leak
  • Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods
  • Turn off taps while washing your face, brushing your teeth or shaving
  • Use a bucket rather than a hosepipe to wash your car: using a garden hosepipe could use as much as 30 litres of water per minute
  • Avoid flushing the toilets unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues and other waste in the waste bin rather than the toilet. If the toilet flush get stuck in the flush position causing water to run constantly, replace or adjust it.
  • Never put used water down the drain when there may be other use for it such as water the garden.
  • Take shorter showers. Replace your showerhead with an ultra-low-flow version.

As JW we continue to supply the city and its customers with fresh, clean and healthy drinking water each day and responsible for ensuring the million litres of waste water generated daily is treated to the high standards demanded by the Department of Water Affairs. The quality of our tap water continues to be rated as amongst the best in the world, and to ensure that this status is maintained, we routinely samples over 500 drinking water samples per month from various points across the city.

Furthermore, we remain committed to ensuring that service levels improve continuously as we strive towards providing Johannesburg,  a world class African city, with world class water and sanitation services.

Together we can save more water.

End
