2010-03-25:Johannesburg ready to protect 2010 visitors and residents, says Mayor Masondo.

Johannesburg will step-up crime prevention and law-enforcement activities to make the city safe for residents and visitors during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

In a meeting with ambassadors, high commissioners and members of the Diplomatic Corps, Clr Amos Masondo, the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, today gave assurances that the City is ready to host and protect the large number of foreign visitors expected to attend the tournament.

Mayor Masondo referred to the fact that more than 25% of the 32 competing nations will be based in Johannesburg for the preparation phase of the tournament, namely Australia, Brazil, Honduras, Mexico, the Netherlands, North Korea, Serbia, Slovenia and the home team, Bafana Bafana.

With regards to security he said the City has appointed additional Metro Police Officers to ensure traffic management and the enforcement of by-Laws and FIFA regulations.

The JMPD will work together with the SA Police Services to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. Among the steps Johannesburg has taken are:

Increased the number of Closed Circuit Television monitors in the Inner City. The use of this surveillance technology within the Inner City has already resulted in a significant reduction in the incidence of crime.
Strengthened its ability to enforce the City's by-laws and looking after seemingly minor issues such as the cutting of overgrown grass and fencing of areas that are considered unsafe.
Continued to strengthen Community Policing Forums to reinforce other related efforts.
Stepped up crime prevention efforts with special attention to the sale of alcohol, drug manufacturing and distribution and firearm control.
Increased the visibility of JMPD officers and improved response times. Mayor Masondo assured the diplomatic representatives that Johannesburg is on track and ready to host the World Cup.

"We are confident that everything will go well," he said.
"As a City, we are constantly receiving favourable feedback from FIFA, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and national government on our state of readiness.

"Together we will deliver the best-ever World Cup experience and leave a lasting legacy for the people of Africa, South Africa, Gauteng and Johannesburg," said Mayor Masondo.
