2010-03-25:The City of Johannesburg Employee Soccer Day

On Friday March 26, 2010, the City of Joburg is inviting all non-essential services staff to participate in an Employee Soccer Day at Soccer City.

For most employees this will be a chance to see first hand the completed Soccer City Stadium which was rebuilt to house 8 of 15 FIFA World Cup matches in Joburg, including the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies.

The City’s 2010 office and stadium management have been charged with the task of testing the stadium ahead of the World Cup, a job which the city’s employees will be helping them with on this massive football Friday. “We will be looking at everything from toilets to taps, steps to signs, evacuation procedures, safety measures and seating and trust our employees will be able to report back to us if there are any elements that do not meet the proper standards,” said Operations Director for 2010, Christa Venter.

With a staff of 20 000 to 30 000 expected to attend, other activities have been planned to put operations staff and the City’s employees who will be working during the World Cup to the test on the day.

The City Manager Mavela Dlamini has given his blessing for non-essential services staff to attend the event with the approval of their supervisors.

Staff at the City’s Municipal-owned entities will also be attending. Some have put forward very tough challenges on the field with teams from Joburg Water being matched against Grinaker, Councillors pitted against Soccer Legends and a host of other employee teams playing off for the finals.

Many fun activities including mini-soccer, the Diski dancers,  and other entertainment has been planned for the day.

All City of Johannesburg employees will witness the launch of the '1 Shot is all it takes to make a difference' the City employees’ internal campaign for staff to motivate them towards service excellence during this year’s World Cup.
