2010-03-29:City budget will improve key services

Visible policing, job creation programmes and the extension of the Rea Vaya Bus system will all receive a sizeable portion of this year’s Johannesburg Budget.

Addressing over 5 500 representatives from various constituencies at the annual City Stakeholder Summit in Midrand on Saturday, the Executive Mayor, Clr Amos Masondo, named the areas that will receive priority attention in the 2010/11 Budget that he will deliver in May.

Mayor Masondo said this year’s budget will consist of an operating budget of R25 billion and a capital budget of R2, 9 billion. The draft budget was tabled in the City Council earlier this week for public comment.

The Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) will receive significant funding to deal with issues of crime, by-law enforcement, increased police visibility and traffic management.

Among the other budget items that Mayor Masondo singled out are:

  • Public lighting will be improved in areas such as Ivory Park, Braamfischerville, Drieziek, Rabie Ridge, Stretford and informal settlements.
  • Economic Development will receive an allocation for the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) city-wide and SMME support initiatives.
  • Funds allocated to Transport will continue with the implementation of the Rea Vaya BRT as well as transport road safety plans such as speed humps, traffic calming and road markings.
  • Community Development will also receive funds for programmes such as the Expanded Social Package, and the maintenance of social amenities.
  • Money will be set aside to implement projects such as upgrading of hostels, the formalisation of informal settlements, and for Inner City Emergency accommodation.
  • A substantial amount will be invested on the upgrading gravel roads in Diepsloot, Doornkop, Ivory Park and Orange Farm.

Mayor Masondo called on communities in Johannesburg to engage with the budget process and said the City remains accountable to the people.

“The City of Johannesburg will continue to lift the bar and strive towards higher and quality standards of service delivery in line with the Batho Pele principles,” said Mayor Masondo.
