2010-04-05: Joburg to crackdown on bus lanes
THE City of Johannesburg is concerned about the illegal use of bus lanes by taxis and in particular, an incident on Easter Weekend which resulted in an unnecessary injury on the Metrobus commuters, damage to the bus and property.
In an attempt to avoid colliding with a taxi reported to have driven recklessly on the bus lane, a Metrobus driver swerved and lost control of the bus which hit a building at Portland Street on Thursday (1 April).
The driver of the bus, Ms S W Sidinane was admitted in a critical condition at the Millpark Hospital while 10 injured commuters were taken to the Helen Joseph and Garden City Hospitals for treatment.
At the start of the weekend the Executive Mayor, Clr Amos Masondo called road users to drive carefully and obey the traffic rules. He also appealed to motorists to keep to the speed limits and not to drive under the influence of alcohol or any other substances.
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) on Public Safety, Elgina Ndhlovu, has also warned that the Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) will crack down on any road users who break the rules, including obscructing bus lanes. She added that these activities are a serious concern and the JMPD will not hesitate to take action against anyone who bend road rules.
The taxi involved in the Metrobus accident did not stop but police have reported to have traced it in Kimberley. The driver of this vehicle is expected to make a statement in Johannesburg soon after his return.
Large sections of the City's highways and secondary roads are still under construction as part of the road improvement project and preparations for the 2010 World Cup. Road users are cautioned to make an extra effort to drive carefully in those affected areas and show consideration for fellow road users - especially pedestrians and young children.
