2010-04-11: City prepares for the national municipal strike action

THE strike by municipal employees that is due to start on Monday 12 April 2010 is a national one, as such the City of Johannesburg, working together with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), are putting together contingency plans to mitigate against the effects of the strike action by members of the South African Municipal Union (SAMWU).

Notwithstanding the fact that this is a national strike, the City will make every effort to ensure that there will be minimal or no interruption to public services. All essential services employees are excluded from taking part in the strike action tomorrow.

The City of Johannesburg supports the constitutional right to engage on a strike in compliance with the Labour Relations Act. However, in the exercise of this fundamental right, SAMWU must ensure that it members respect and uphold the rights of those that have elected not to strike and in particular those operating in essential services. In this regard the City calls on the union leadership to ensure that SAMWU members refrain from any act of intimidation or lawlessness whilst exercising their right to strike.

In cases where service backlog problems are experienced, necessary arrangements will be made to catch up and residents are urged to report service problems at our Call Centre on 011 375-5555.
