2010-04-14: Joburg condemns acts of violence and intimidation

THE City of Johannesburg strongly condemns the random acts of violence perpetrated by striking workers at the various health facilities throughout the City.

The strike by members of SAMWU continued today affecting a number of services rendered by the City of Johannesburg.

The City continues to call on SAMWU to find a negotiated solution to the issues in dispute and to end the strike in the interest of the residents.

The City, at the outset, called on the strike organisers and union members to refrain from acts of violence, intimidation and vandalism but there are elements who obviously did not heed the call.

There are still disturbing reports of acts of intimidation and violence against non-striking employees at various health facilities. The City views the situation in a serious light given that fact that Primary Health Care is an essential Service and is monitoring the situation.

The City wants to assure residents that the clinics remain open for regular patients and those seeking medical attention.

The City, once again, apologises to residents for certain services that may be affected by the strike.
