2010-04-20: Joburg's drinking water the best in the country
THE City of Johannesburg has welcomed a scientific research report by the confirming that the quality of the City's tap water is "the best in the country."
"This is high praise for Johannesburg and confirms our commitment to provide only the best quality of drinking water to residents and visitors to our City," says the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Services, Clr Christine Walters.
In its annual "Blue Drop" report the Department of Water Affairs indicated that it tested and assessed the water quality of 787 municipal water authorities in the country.
The City of Johannesburg came out on top with a score of 98, 4 following the rigorous testing process – ahead of all other metros and local authorities.
Municipalities are evaluated on their management plans, regular data collection and submissions and drinking water compliance with the South African National Standard (SANS).
For this achievement the City received the coveted "Blue Drop" rating from the Department.
As the primary host city for the 2010 Soccer World Cup Johannesburg has also received a FIFA Blue Drop Certification.
"These reports will be encouraging for the teams and fans that will be in Johannesburg during the World Cup," says Clr Walters.
"Johannesburg is one of the few big cities in the world where you can drink water right from the tap. There is no need for anyone to buy bottled water in Johannesburg," she says.
Johannesburg Water currently supplies more than 650 000 domestic and business customers with quality, clean water, reaching more than 3 million people every day.
"Given the size of our operations, it is indeed a big achievement for Joburg Water to provide residents with among the best quality of drinking water to be found anywhere in the world," says Clr Walters.
