2010-05-10: Soccer day at Grantley College
THE City of Joburg will be supporting Grantley College's FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup awareness campaign when the school opens its new soccer field on Saturday, 15 May 2010.
The event is also the school's main fundraiser for the year.
With the theme 'Geared for 2010 Soccer World Cup', the school will be divided into twelve countries drawn from various classes to be represented on the day. There will also be a 5-a-side match. On the programme there will also be traditional dancing by learners from the school.
Classes will showcase foods from the 12 respective countries which will be later up for sale.
The formal opening will take place at 11h00 at the school field.
A soccer game played by two soccer league teams will be provided by Director of the City of Johannesburg's 2010 office, Linda Ngwenya (a dad of one of the college's former learners).
As a build up to the big day and to garner excitement for the World Cup, the learners are showing their support for “Football Fridays” by wearing their soccer jerseys to school.
A team of former students from the school have also been invited to participate in a match.
