2010-05-14: JRA celebrates Football Friday
THE Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) celebrated Football Friday in Joburg style this morning when staff at JRA's headquarters lined Sauer Street in the CBD blowing vuvuzelas and wearing soccer shirts to rally civic pride for the city's imminent hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™
Joburg launched its Football Fridays at Soccer City in March with a 1 Shot internal staff campaign. "The slogan, It only takes 1-shot to make a difference is geared at employees to encourage them to go the extra mile for the citizens of Joburg during the build-up to the big event," said Gaynor Mashamaite-Noyce, spokesperson for the City of Joburg.
"We want to ignite civic pride and encourage all Joburgers to fly their flags, wear their football jerseys, make a lot of noise with their vuvuzelas and shanyele amabala (clean up) their surrounding workplaces and homes to get ready to welcome ama visitors," she added.
Traffic passing along the busy Sauer Street this morning hooted in solidarity with JRA employees
who each declared "I am a proud host of FIFA 2010 World Cup™.
JRA has decked out the entrance to its building with the 32 flags of the nation teams participating in the World Cup.
City employees are supporting the national Football Fridays each week with a host of activities including the launching of the Joburg Rocks campaign on 20 days next Friday afternoon in Vilikazi Street, Soweto with a giant street party.
The inauguration of Soccer City will take place on May 22nd with the final of the Nedbank Cup which gives Joburg the chance to test its stadium operational readiness. One May 23 (Sunday) the premiere opening of The Boys in the Photograph at the Joburg Theatre kicks off.
This week Joburg launched its public viewing plans for Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown. The launch of Space – an exhibition of artists from all over the continent – opened its doors on Monday at the Market Theatre, Newtown. Entrance is free and the exhibit will run for the duration of the World Cup.
