2010-06-09: City cuts on World Cup tickets

THE  City  of  Johannesburg  has  cut  down  on  the number of tickets made available  to  the City's political leadership and councillors for the 2010 FIFA  World  Cup.  This  decision  was  taken as part of the City's broader policy to reduce spending on non-essential items.

The  City Manager, Mr Mavela Dlamini, says the City is aware of the need to look  at  all  expenditure  items  and  to cut back on "luxury items." This approach  was also evident in the 2010/11 Budget delivered by the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Clr Amos Masondo in May.

"We  are  also  responding  to  a call by made by the Gauteng MEC for Local Government  and  Housing, Mr Kgaogelo Lekgoro, for municipalities not to be extravagant during the World Cup period," says Mr Dlamini.

The City has decided to allocate a limited number of tickets for matches to be  played at Soccer City and Ellis Park to senior leadership. This process has been completed and there are no more tickets available.

Mr Dlamini says the City is receiving a number of requests for tickets from various quarters – including foreign delegations – but it is unable to meet these requests.
