The City of Johannesburg, Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system is celebrating a year since its launch last year on 30th August 2009.

“The first year has been eventful but we have risen above all odds and Rea Vaya has proven to be the preferred public transport system for over 34 000 people per day,” said MMC Moosajee, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, in the City of Joburg.

“As the city celebrates this milestone we plan to host a variety of stakeholders who have played a pivotal role in the overwhelming success of this mega project, said MMC Moosajee.

“These stakeholders have been amenable from the beginning of this journey. It is hard to believe that what started as a dream has grown to be such a huge success”, she added.

The City has arranged three activities to celebrate the first anniversary of the Rea Vaya. Firstly, there will be a picnic for Rea Vaya bus drivers, the staff who are employed at the stations by MTC and the staff who are part of the Transportation Department. The picnic will be also be a “thank you” gesture to all the staff that worked hard delivering a world class service during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Secondly, our regular passengers will be given a surprise birthday gift on Monday as well as being asked to send birthday greetings to the Rea Vaya project. Thirdly, there will be a gala dinner for Rea Vaya stakeholders on Monday night.

“The function is also an opportunity for the city to thank all those who have been involved in making this project work, this include construction workers, taxi operators, consultants, national and provincial government, and most importantly our commuters,” said MMC for Transport in the City of Johannesburg , Clr Rehana Moosajee.

The City wishes Rea Vaya a happy first anniversary and would like to thank all commuters for their continued positive patronage and commits to continue providing safe, affordable and reliable public transport.
