2010-10-18: Car Free Day 20 October 2010
The City of Johannesburg will be joining the rest of South Africa in celebrating the National Car Free Day on 20 October 2010. The theme for transport month this year is: “Transport: Moving Joburg to do more”.
Residents of Johannesburg are urged to take part in the celebration by using public transport such as buses, trains, taxis or joining lift clubs. In addition, Rea Vaya C3 Inner City Cycle Route will be offering free services for 4 days from 20 October to 23 October. Gautrain bus trips will also be free on 20 October.
Using public transport can be a good experience for private car users. This will give car users an opportunity to learn more about public transport and save on petrol costs while at the same time contributing to the reduction of emissions. Public transport usage will also assist to ease traffic congestion on our roads.
The focus of this year’s transport month celebrations revolves around the promotion of public transport, educating people on road safety issues and upgrading the City’s roads and storm water infrastructure.
All private car users in Johannesburg are invited to make use of this day to determine a method of public transport that is most suitable for their individual needs, thereby contributing to the easing of congestion, reduction of car emissions and saving the environment.
