2010-10-21: JPC set to demolish illegal structures on City of Joburg land

The City of Joburg Property Company (JPC) is the only municipal owned entity mandated to develop, alienate and manage the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality's (the City) property. In fulfilling this mandate to develop and manage the City's land for the maximum benefit of the City's citizens, JPC applied and was granted demolition orders at the High Court of all illegal structures on the City's owned land in Soweto, particularly in Power Park, Dhlamini, Diepkloof, Orlando West and Dobsonville.

Without fear and favour and in line with the court order, JPC is in the process of beginning with the demolition of all structures illegally built on the Council owned land. Illegal building and illegal occupation of the City's land hampers economic development among communities as resources and time meant for development is used up on legal processes. JPC is also in the process of evicting all illegal occupiers currently occupying other City owned properties.

Through our stakeholders unit JPC has had meetings with affected communities to inform them about procedures one has to follow to acquire and build on CoJ owned land. Some were informed when their structures were still on foundation level and they proceeded to build on the land in defiance of the court order and JPC.

JPC's objectives are to harness the City's property portfolio transactions to increase economic growth and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), while creating jobs and economic opportunities for the disadvantaged communities and businesses.

JPC does not use agents or brokers when leasing or selling property. The law demands JPC to dispose off the City's land by way of an open tender system that allows everybody an opportunity to participate in the economic development of the World Class African City.

In line with this objective, if and when people as in the case of all illegally built structures, occupy the City's land without following due process, JPC will not hesitate to take all the necessary steps to protect the property belonging to the City of Johannesburg.
