2010-10-28: 100% Property rebate for pensioners

THERE are a potential 49 000 account holders who may qualify for pensioner relief on their property rates for up to two years.

According to Kgamanyane Maphologela, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg's Revenue and Customer Relations Management Department, account holders who are 60 years or older and in occupation of their residential property, qualify for a rebate on the rates portion of their municipal account.

Pensioners on a national security grant or those with a gross monthly income less than R5300 qualify for a 100% rebate in line with the City's rates policy. For pensioners in a higher income bracket (R5300 up to R9 600) the City also offers a 50% rates rebate. Property value should not however exceed R1,5 million.

"In the past year only 5000 pensioners received a monthly rebate. In these financial times, the City recognizes that our pensioners are exposed to a high cost of living and the rebate is but a small offering aimed at alleviating the burden. We therefore urge all pensioners who meet the criteria to apply for a rebate." said member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance, councilor Parks Tau.

To qualify for a pensioner's rates rebate, account holders must own and live in the property to which the rates are applicable and either

  • Be dependant on a National Security Grant (qualify for a100% rebate);
  • Have a gross monthly income of less than R5 300 (qualify for a 100% rebate); or
  • Have a gross income of between R5 300 and R9 600 (qualify for a 50% rebate);
  • House/property value should not exceed R1,5 m

Pensioners will be required to submit the following evidence to support their application:

  • Certified copy of your South African ID
  • Certified copy of your pension card;
  • Proof of Income/Bank statement; and
  • Certified application form by Commissioner of Oaths
