2010-12-24: Call for help to support Johannesburg flood victims

THE City of Johannesburg is appealing to individuals and companies to assist victims of the recent floods with emergency relief supplies.

This follows a visit by the Executive Mayor, Clr Amos Masondo, to flood-stricken areas in Soweto. During his visit Mayor Masondo spoke to families that were afflicted by the floods and assessed the damage caused by the heavy rains in recent days.

Although the region has not been declared a disaster area in terms of the Disaster Management Act the City is issuing a broad appeal for humanitarian assistance to support flood victims.

Clr Amos Masondo said, "We are fortunate that there has been no loss of life but the water caused extensive damage to properties and many families lost most of their possessions. "We call on the people of Johannesburg and especially the business community to be generous in their support to flood victims during this
festive season. Our people are well-known for their generosity and we are confident that they will, once more, come to the aid of the less fortunate," says Clr Masondo.

An initial needs assessment by the City has shown a number of areas where support is the most required such as:

Clothing;
Blankets, mattresses and linen;
Food;
Household furniture;
Basic Appliances;
Building material, bricks, cement, roofing and doors.
The City, supported by welfare NGOs will be responsible for the distribution of goods to needy families.

Enquiries on relief support can be directed to Tel: 011 375 6009. The City will publish a close-out report to the public on the way in which public money and donations have been distributed to needy communities.
