2011-04-01: City calls for public comment on draft rates policy

THE City of Johannesburg's draft rates policy and amendments thereto for the 2011/12 financial year are now open for public comment.

"This is a very important process and we especially urge property owners to make their input so that the final approved rates policy is one that has been thoroughly consulted upon by all stakeholders", says Mrs Sihle More director of the Rates Department.

The rates policy is implemented to guide the City in all aspects of levying rates on owners of property. The proposed amendments are set out in the schedule that accompanies the rates policy and should be read in conjunction with the draft policy.

Owners of property have up to the 2 May 2011 to comment on the draft rates policy. These can be emailed to RatesComment@joburg.org.za, faxed to 011 727 0189 or dropped off at reception at Jorissen Place 66 Jorissen Street Braamfontein.

The draft policy and a summary of amendments are also available on the Council's website, www.joburg.org.za. Public meetings will also be held in each Region from 11 to 20 April 2011 between 6pm and 8pm.

Municipalities are required by the Local Government Municipal Property Rates Act 6 of 2004 to annually review their rates policy and if necessary amend it.

Since 2008, the City has annually reviewed its rates policy to reflect changes proposed by both the public and Council.
