2011-05-20: Mayor Masondo praises emergency action after Soweto train crash

Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Clr Amos Masondo, has praised the city’s emergency services for their quick and effective response to the major train crash that happened in Soweto last night.

He says emergency personnel were on the scene short after the accident and to treat and stabilise the injured and to transport those who required advanced treatment to nearby hospitals.

“We are pleased to note that no fatalities were reported but we remain concerned about the well-being of the people who suffered serious injuries,” he said.

Mayor Masondo and the Member of the Mayoral Committee, Clr Parks Tau will be visiting the injured passengers who are being treated at Chris Hani Baragwanath and other hospitals in Johannesburg at the earliest opportunity.

The Mayor said a significant number of the residents and citizens of Johannesburg depend on rail transport in their daily lives and rail safety is, thus an important issue for the City. The city will provide support to any investigation on the cause of the accident.
