2011-05-31: Mayor Tau congratulates Orlando Pirates on winning the “treble”​

Orlando Pirates have made Johannesburg proud by becoming the first ever team to win three championships trophies in one season, says the City’s Executive Mayor, Clr Mpho Parks Tau.

The new Mayor congratulated the team and its chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza after the Bucs made history on Saturday by winning the Nedbank Cup.

“To score a treble is a unique achievement. The whole city – including supporters of rival teams – will celebrate with Orlando Pirates to mark their victory,” he says.

Pirates have already, earlier in the season captured the MTN8 competition and last week also walked away with the coveted Premiership title.

Mayor Tau says Orlando Pirates’ accomplishment confirmed Johannesburg’s reputation as a city that produces champions. “I hope that these victories will encourage more youngsters to become involved in sports activities as part of a healthy lifestyle.”

He also congratulated Jomo Cosmos on its promotion to the Premiership next season, adding another local team to the country’s top football competition.
