2011-06-03: City pitching up to clean Soweto, saying no to illegal dumping
The City of Johannesburg is stepping in once more to clean-up hot spots where dumping is taking its toll in some areas of Soweto. The campaign will start at the Zondi depot in Soweto on Saturday 04 and Sunday 05 June 2011 (Zondi Depot is situated on the corner of Koma and Elias Motsoaledi Roads).
City officials and Pikitup employees will be leaving the Pikitup Zondi depot by trucks from 07h00 on both days to clean identified spots in Soweto.
The two day clean up blitz is part of a three months short term programme, which will also see some of the illegal dumping sites turned into recreational facilities.
Illegal dumping is a growing concern in Johannesburg and the City is sending a message that illegal dumping can not be tolerated hence residents need to be aware that by-law enforcement will take its course. Illegal dumping often is caused by residents of Johannesburg who do not adhere to their refuse collection schedules for their area and end up disposing of their waste and litter in open spaces.
By clearing illegal dumping, rats and other rodents which thrive in polluted areas will be reduced if not eradicated. Since these vectors pose great danger for the health of residents, this clean up will immediately make a difference to the community.
Residents are encouraged to report cases of illegal dumping by calling Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555 or sending an e-mail to joburgconnect@joburg.org.za.
