2011-06-26: City to host conference on migration and refugees
THE impact of migration and the movement of refugees on the business community will be examined at a conference to be hosted by the City of Johannesburg, later this month.
The theme of the two day conference scheduled for 28 and 29 June is: "How to benefit from human mobility in reaching professional objectives?" and forms part of the First Expert Consultation for Business and Cities on Migration and Urbanisation.
Johannesburg is hosting the conference in partnership with The Hague Process on Refugees and Migration (THP) – a global initiative to influence public policy on issues such as migration, asylum seekers and human trafficking.
National and international policymakers, academics, researchers and representatives from business and civil society will attend the two day conference at the Joburg Civic Theatre.
The objective is to arrive at practical migration insights. Participants will share knowledge and research on a number of issues including:
Evidence-based analysis of current and future migration movements and global trends;
Identified migration issues of compelling interest to both business and local government, while spelling out the differences in their perspective;
The development and exchange of practical solutions to problems of human mobility, including the effective tools within business and local government settings
The discussions and outcomes of the conference are expected to have an impact on local policies and programmes relating to refugees and migrants and will also serve as an input to the 2011 Global Hearing on the issue.
