2011-06-30:Trevor Fowler is the new City Manager of Johannesburg
A well-known top government and civic leader, Trevor Fowler, has been appointed as the new City Manager of Johannesburg.
Executive Mayor, Mpho Parks Tau, says the City is fortunate to call on someone with the qualities and experience of Mr Fowler to lead the administration of South Africa’s most vibrant city into an exciting new growth phase.
“He brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge in the public and private sectors, politics, administration and the professions. We are truly delighted to welcome him in his new position in the City and looking forward to the contribution he will make in all areas of the city’s business,” says Mayor Tau.
Mr Fowler, who will take up his new position on 01 October 2011, is currently an executive director at JSE –listed Murray & Roberts, one of the country’s premier construction companies.
His previous experience includes a stint as Chief Operating Officer and Acting Director-General in the Presidency from 2004-2009. In this capacity he served President Mothlante in the early months of his Presidential term from Se 2008 June 2009.
A civil engineer by profession Mr Fowler gained extensive experience in South Africa and later, in exile, in the USA, Canada and Botswana. He is a former chairperson of the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority and a deputy chairperson of the Health Systems Trust.
He entered politics in 1994 as an elected representative of the ANC in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Five years later, in 1999, he was appointed Member of the Provincial Executive Council for Development Planning and Local Government.
He served as Political Advisor to the Premier of Gauteng prior to his appointment in the Presidency.
Mayor Tau says Mr Fowler has proven himself in leadership positions that are critical to the future management of the City – from finance to engineering and from urban planning to environmental issues.
As City Manager he will now lead an administration that manages an operating budget of more than R29 billion and a capital budget of R3, 7 billion – announced by Mayor Tau in his Budget Speech on Tuesday (29/6).
Mayor Tau would like to thank the City Manager, Mr Mavela Dlamini and the entire management team for their dedication and commitment. Johannesburg will not forget the contribution they have made over the past five years.
