2011-07-07: Joburg hosts "Younite" youth celebration in the Inner City

JOBURG'S Region F will reach out to the youth living, working, studying and playing in the Inner City through "Younite!" a youth celebration on Friday, July 8 at Newtown Park, in Newtown. The day-long event will afford the City with an opportunity to create awareness among the youth through community participation, games, theatre, music, comedy and prizes. This celebration is hosted in partnership with "Youth Ina City."

The event is being hosted as a direct result of the resolutions taken at the Building hi-jacking and Slum Lording Summit held on 19 April 2011, that the City of Joburg needs to accommodate more positive aspects of the Inner City, by highlighting the successes of the City in curbing building hijacking and slum lording.

The region decided to mobilise the Youth in order to spread the word and assist in identifying possible bad buildings.

"The Inner city has a population which consists of sixty percent youth and the City of Joburg is working hand in hand with the youth in our city, by tackling issues of building hijacking. Together we are positive that we can build a brighter, more prosperous City which will offer our young people hope and opportunities for the future," said Nathi Mthethwa, Regional Director for the Inner City.

In addition to the entertainment during the event, the youth will also be informed and educated on the following topics:

Drug abuse and substance abuse
HIV and AIDS awareness
Entrepreneurship opportunities
Bursaries and study programmes information
Arts and sports activities
Youth with disabilities and  women empowerment
Moral regeneration
"It is of paramount importance that young people become custodians of their own development," said Youth Ina City member, Kenneth Niewenhuis.
