2011-07-07: Public Conveniences
26 public restrooms have been given a major spruce-up and overhaul throughout the city during the 2010/11 financial year. The City of Johannesburg's Facilities Management directorate has undertaken a programme to build a number of new public conveniences and upgrade the existing ones.
The department has identified various hotspots, mainly in public places where crowds of people pass through and converge. About 17 new public conveniences were built recently. Some of the old sites have also been upgraded and renovated. In total there are eighty nine such facilities scattered in all regions of the city. These facilities are maintained and cleaned seven days a week.
However, the City is concerned about sporadic incidents of theft and vandalism at some public restrooms. "We appeal to communities to respect and take care of these facilities and more importantly report vandalism" said Mr. Jay Gowrie-Sunker, Director: Facilities Management and Maintenance in the City of Johannesburg. Vandalism has led to many of these facilities being closed and this inconveniences the general public.
The city is working tirelessly to improve the quality of public restrooms. "We strive to provide public conveniences that are of acceptable standards in terms of safety, hygiene and ensuring that they are accessible to everyone, including disabled people" he added.
The City of Johannesburg's Facilities Management directorate manages 89 public restrooms while other facilities at taxi ranks and parks are managed by Metro Trading Company and Johannesburg City Parks respectively.
All City entities are committed to provide access to clean and safe public conveniences for greater comfort of all its citizens within a more attractive environment.
