2011-10-03: City launches new Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan with Household Travel Survey

THE City of Johannesburg will be launching the development of a new Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan with a Household Travel Survey in from September, to November this year.

The City is doing a new Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan to ensure that it is able to ensure the efficient and effective provision of transport in a way which is aligned to and will support the needs of its residents and the long term Growth and Development Strategy of the City.

"The Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan will be a very important document to guide how the City will provide, integrate and support public transport, walking and cycling," said Cllr Rehana Moosajee, Member of the Mayoral Committee in the City of Johannesburg.

"The City is presently engaged on an outreach programme to get the views of residents and stakeholders on a long term Growth and Development Strategy and the Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan will be an important vehicle to ensure the successful implementation of this strategy", she added.

Doing the Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan is a requirement of the National Land Transport Act (NLTA) Act 5 0f 2009 and will include proposed long term networks for rail, Rea Vaya, Metrobus and mini bus taxi industry as well as how these modes should be integrated.

The Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan will require many different inputs including:

Feedback from political representatives;
Community and stakeholder consultation;
Policies and plans of other spheres of government;
Updating the City's register of all available public transport operators, facilities etc; and
Doing a Household Travel Survey to establish travel patterns of Joburg residents.
The Household Travel Survey will be conducted through visiting 8000 randomly selected households and selecting one household member to assist with the travel patterns information during the interview.  The survey methodology makes sure that the sample of 8 000 is representative.

The survey will be conducted by the Community Agency for Social Enquiry (CASE) who will contract qualified data gatherers to visit households.

CASE officials will be identified by reflector jackets with CASE's name on it and all officials will have a name tag and letter from the City of Joburg confirming the survey.
