2011-10-10: Let's clean the kerb inlets before the summer rains
THE Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Transport in the City of Johannesburg, Clr Rehana Moosajee, will participate in an initiative to clean storm water systems in the City.
This forms part of the Transport Month activities for the City of Johannesburg. Under the theme, "Connecting people and places", the city's transport month programme seeks to address a number of issues which includes protecting the city's roads and storm water infrastructure.
The main activity will be held in Alexandra, where the MMC will lead the team consisting of employees from the Transport department and the Johannesburg Roads Agency on a cleanup drive, which includes the cleaning of all kerb inlets, pothole patching, levelling of verges, clear silt, removal of concrete, street sweeping, paving, repair kerbs, repairing of broken signage, and level 1 cleaning.
This forms part of the Letsema programme is being rolled out throughout the city's regions by the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
Letsema programme, meaning a collective effort is a comprehensive approach to render services such as closing potholes, patching of roads, and cleaning of streets among others.
The work will also include painting street names and the erection of poles and road signs.
Clr Moosajee will address members of the community, councillors, JRA and transportation officials on the role of storm water channels and the need for the community to protect the storm water infrastructure.
The JRA is a municipal-owned entity responsible for planning, designing, and maintaining all roads infrastructures in the city. It looks after 9435 kilometres of Roads, 1986 Traffic Intersections, 804 Bridges and Culverts and 3493 kilometres of storm water drains.
