THE City of Johannesburg will be joining the rest of South Africa in celebrating the National Car Free Day on 20 October 2011. The theme for transport month this year is: "Connecting people and places"
Residents of Johannesburg are urged to take part in the celebration by using public transport such as buses, trains, taxis or joining lift clubs. Using public transport can be a good experience for private car users.
Car free day is about promoting the use of public transportation and giving motorists an opportunity to experience other means of transportation as well as promoting the use of walking, and cycling.
"Be one of the many that will reduce the use of private cars on 20 October" called Clr Rehana Moosajee, MMC for Transport in the City of Joburg.
"Decide to walk, ride a bike or take a bus", she urged.
The use of public transport will assist to ease traffic congestion on our roads, improve our air quality and reduce dangerous carbon emissions.
The Transportation Department and Johannesburg Roads Agency will be closing their parking garages on 20th October as part of the Car Free Day campaign.
All private car users in City are invited to make use of this day to determine a method of public transport that is most suitable for their individual needs, thereby contributing to the easing of congestion, reduction of car emissions and saving the environment.
