2011-11-22: City of Joburg embarks on Safety Mall Campaigns

THE City of Johannesburg will be holding a public interactive Safety Mall campaign at Pick and Pay Mall (Orange Farm) and Metropolitan Centre (Eldorado Park) Saturday, 26 November and Sunday, 27 November 2011 respectively, from 10am to 3pm.

Mall exhibitions are an ideal platform to engage with residents and provide members of the communities an opportunity to experience all three services at once. The aim is to create awareness about safety and security amongst the citizens of Johannesburg. The mall campaign activation will visit every region of the City from now to end of December 2011.

As part of this campaign, the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) will embark on 11 mall campaigns and with South African Police Services (SAPS) on four mall campaigns that will be hosted in identified malls within the City aimed at informing the public about issues of road safety, use of fireworks, floods in the rainy season, safety with festive/parties and more. This will assist in influencing a change in behaviour and adhering to City’s by-laws during the festive season.

"There will be no mercy for drunken and speeding drivers this festive season.  Once caught, they will be arrested at once by JMPD.  Drivers of unroadworthy vehicles will also have their licenses confiscated", said Wayne Minnaar from JMPD.

Other objectives of the campaign are:

to create a platform whereby we engage and interact with our customers informally over the weekend at shopping malls;
to impart critical information on safety, water safety, law enforcement and policing;
to market the various career choices within any of the three law enforcement agencies.
