04-10-2012: MMC Mfikoe to Launch Integrated Visible Service Delivery Operation in Region B

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC): Infrastructure Service and Environment, Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe will be launching the Integrated Visible Service

Delivery Operation in Region B at Marks Park, Judith Road, Emmarentia at 09:00 on Monday, 08 October 2012.

She will be accompanied by the recently appointed Group Head: Urban Management and Citizens Relationship Management : Nathi Mthethwa as well as the Acting

Regional Director: Region B, Ms Vicky Shuping.

MMC Mfikoe has described the Integrated Visible Service Delivery Operation as a tool of addressing the challenge of service delivery breakdowns. A multi-

disciplinary approach is key as it assures the community of the City’s commitment in dealing with issues of services due to them. The institutional

structural arrangement of the joint planning and service delivery is beneficial in the sense that it makes responsible Departments accountable. As a result

of accountability from the operational point of view, traces of neglect or dereliction of duty by the officials will be easily detected and dealt with

forthwith.

After the official launch, MMC Mfikoe, Group Head Urban Management and Citizens Relationship Management, various Ward and PR Councillors, officials from

MMCs offices, representatives from Municipal Entities and operations teams in working gear and tools in hand will head to the suburb of Riverlea in Ward 68

to do the ground work themselves.

Riverlea is a previously disadvantaged suburb in an empoverished area and as a result there are many issues that need to be addressed and fixed – from water

leaks, street light outages, illegal dumping, illegal shebeens, illegal trading and many, many more. These will be addressed and identified on the day and

throughout the week up until Friday 12 October 2012. There will also be a strong focus on by-law education.

“Extensive by-law education has to be conducted to sensitise the community to the fact that the City will not tolerate bad behaviour by irresponsible

communities which ultimately affects the public infrastructure and the environment negatively. We need to work together if we are going to make our City

work and make it a better place for all”, said Vicky Shuping, the Acting Regional Director for Region B.

At similar operations preceding this one in Regions A, E and F, MMC Mfikoe has repeatedly stressed and re-iterated the need for beefing up law enforcement

as a means of sustaining the operations and discouraging public neglect and creating responsibility for each and everyone’s actions towards the

infrastructure and the enwironment.

“The important role-players are all on board – JMPD, Joburg Water, Pikitup, JRA, Region B – all of them and we are ready to tackle Riverlea’s problems

head-on as from Monday and then to roll it out to other Wards in the Region”, said Nathi Mthethwa.
