15-10-2012: Joburg hosts the 2012 OR Tambo Games

The City of Johannesburg will host the seventh OR Tambo Inter-Municipal Games 2012 on Friday, 19 October 2012.

The annual games are organized by Gauteng’s South African Local Government Association (Salga) in honour of the late stalwart of the African National

Congress, Oliver Reginald Tambo.

The games coincide with Tambo’s birth month, October.  In 2006, Salga-Gauteng conceptualized the OR Tambo Inter-Municipal Games, in commemoration of the

sterling contribution made by this stalwart in the liberation of  South Africa.

The inaugural games were held in 2006, for employees and councillors of Gauteng municipalities to participate in various sporting codes.

These codes include action cricket, bowling, chess, road cycling, golf, morabaraba, ncuba, netball, pistol shooting, pool, race walking, road running, men

and ladies soccer, squash, table tennis, tennis, men and ladies volley ball and volley ball mixed.

The objectives of the games, among others include promotion of a healthy lifestyle for employees and councilors through active participation in sport.

According to the host City, these games form part of the City of Johannesburg’s  roadmap, Joburg2040 Growth & Development Strategy Joburg2040 GDS), which

commits the City of Johannesburg to provide physical facilities as well as run programmes that encourages communities as well as its employees  to find

space to improve their health.

All Gauteng municipalities will participate in this year’s 7th edition of the OR Tambo Inter-Municipal Games.

The official opening of the competition will be held at Turffontein Race Course which will host about 90% of the games as well as closing ceremony.
