20-11-2012: Joburg communities to really have their say

Johannesburg will begin piloting the Ward Based Planning Process (WBPP) in Region E on Wednesday 21 November and Saturday 24 November 2012 with Information session/workshops with Cllrs & Ward Committee Members.

Based on the new City Clusters approach, cluster community conversations will be held from 26 to 28 November for communities themselves to shape their future.

The WBPP seeks to enhance the City’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget processes. It is more community orientated and the community drives the process. It also allows for Ward Committees together with the Councillor to play a greater support role by unpacking the long and short term strategies of the IDP and annual and medium term budget in a simpler and easy to understand format.

Through this process members community themselves will determine their needs and priorities. This then become a transparent way through which various projects, programmes and initiatives with specific timeframes and budgets are implemented in different wards in collaboration with communities.

The City of Johannesburg believes that by changing course in line with the aspirations of the Joburg 2040 - Growth and Development Strategy (GDS), communities will be empowered to actively participate in determining the development priorities within their wards.

The City has detailed the strategy by identifying a set of flagship programmes to anchor the Joburg 2040 implementation in partnership with communities. In partnership with communities and various stakeholders, the City strives to accelerate the provision of services to all its residents.

It is further anticipated that this approach will encourage participatory democracy, which ensures active interaction with communities so that they can take advantage of services delivered by the City.
