2012-02-22: NGO's to apply for new forms of funding from July 2012

THE City of Johannesburg Health and Social Development Department would like to advise the Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that applications for funding under the Community Based Organization (CBO) stream for 2011-2012 can unfortunately not be considered at this stage.

The Social Funding Policy is an instrument that the City uses to support the non-profit organizations within the City that offers a range of welfare services to the vulnerable citizens of Johannesburg. The categories of support are: (i) Community Based Organization Stream (ii) The Partnership Stream and (iii) The Rates category. The latter is provided through the Rates and Taxes directorate and is distinct from the activities authorized under the Social Funding Policy.

The CBO Stream is implemented throughout the year and applications are dealt with on a first come first served basis to those organizations that are in need of critical support for any organizational or programme costs, particularly those needed to build organizational capability or catalyze additional funding.

A call for applications was advertised in the print media in August 2011, inviting organizations to apply for the CBO funding stream. A total of 208 organizations applied and the process of evaluating the applications and site visits were conducted this year.

However, due to the City's institution review process and the general restructuring of the City's departments and MOEs future plans are currently being finalized. The situation will be reviewed in new financial year.

Naturally, organizations that applied would have been carried over and dealt with within the implementation cycle of 2012/2013 financial year. However, due to the proposed policy changes that will apply from July 2012, current applicants will be required to re-apply under the terms of the new policy.
