2012-03-06: City prepares for Cosatu national strike action

THE City of Johannesburg has put together contingency plans for the strike action planned by Cosatu and its affiliates on the 07 March 2012.

The City of Johannesburg said it does not anticipate disruptions to essential services. All essential services such as health, bulk water, police, EMS and electricity will be provided as usual.

Johannesburg supports the right of workers to exercise their rights as enshrined in our country's Constitution and the Labour Relations Act. In the exercise of this fundamental right, those involved are expected to also recognise the rights of those that have elected not to participate in the march and those of our people who need to access municipal services, in particular essential services.

However, the City will apply the 'no work, no pay' policy to those who chose to participate. All senior managers throughout the City have been requested to compile statistics of all work attendance and absence on that day.

The City assures all its customers and residents that effort will be made to minimise disruption of services. Security measures in all council buildings have been put in place to ensure public safety.

Several streets in the Johannesburg CBD will be impacted during the march, which is expected to start at 10 am from the Beyers Naude Square. These include President, Rissik, De Korte, De Beer, Smit, Biccard, Simmonds, Fox, Anderson, Sauer and Market. People are advised to where possible avoid the Joburg CBD between 10 and 14:30.
