THE City of Johannesburg invites you to attend the plaque unveiling ceremony in honour of Thoko Mngoma as part of the celebration of the Alexandra 100 years
Centenary on Monday, 18 June 2012.
Cllr Nonceba Molwele, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development and Mngoma family representatives will unveil the plaque of
Thoko Mngoma at the clinic. Thoko Mngoma was a founding member of Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW) after the ANC was banned.
She assisted in forming of the Alexandra Women's Organisation (AWO), which and other youth organisations were holding their meeting in her house to avoid
police harassment.
She played a critical role during the Defiance Campaign in 1952 and fought against Bantu Education. She was also amongst the women who marched to the Union
Buildings on 9 August 1956. Her involvement with the South African Communist Party led to her being placed under house arrest for five years. She helped
influence today's activities in and around Alexandra.
