2012-07-19: MMC Mfikoe congratulates Environment department for winning Top Environment award

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Infrastructure Services and Environment Cllr Matshidiso Mfikoe, congratulates all Environment department employees

for their contributions in winning the first prize of R300 000 in the Metropolitan category in the coveted Bontle ke Botho awards.   The BKB awards are an

initiative of the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDRAD). Initiated in 2002, Bontle Ke Botho is a clean and green campaign that

aims to encourage Gauteng citizens to beautify their areas and conserve their natural resources.   The campaign’s intention is to motivate communities to

strive towards attaining sustainable livelihoods and poverty eradication.   Bontle Ke Botho takes form of a competition for both wards, schools, local and

metropolitan municipalities. The City of Johannesburg participates in the campaign on a yearly basis, and is in the Metropolitan Municipalities category

alongside the City of Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.   This year the City of Johannesburg received a total of 71 entries, with 42 from schools and 29 from wards.

This is an improvement from last year’s 35 entries.  The adjudication process was scheduled for 29 June 2012 and 02 July 2012.  The adjudication panel was

made up of delegates from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture (GDARD), who are specialists in environment and communications.
