2012-12-13: Joburg Carnival set to reflect future Joburg in 2040
The City of Joburg’s Community Development Department will be hosting its 9th Joburg Carnival themed “Jozi Lights Up GDS 2040” on the 31st December 2012. The Johannesburg residents can expect a flamboyant and electrifying spectacle when the City’s streets come alive with colourful and unique large costumes and floats, gigantic puppets and stilt walkers, music, dance, drama and poetry. The Joburg Carnival is one of the City’s flagship events which promote social cohesion and the unification of the City’s residents through safe vibrant and fun filled street parades and performances by all the 7 Regions of the City of Johannesburg.
The MMC for Community Development, Councillor Chris Vondo says the overall theme for this year’s Carnival is an inspirational strategy that defines the type of society the city aspires to achieve by 2040. As the 2013 Orange Afcon Cup will be hosted by South Africa, the City is delighted that both the opening and closing games have been scheduled to play in Johannesburg, and this will give the City an opportunity to parade an AFCON Cup large costume to welcome all the African countries that will be taking part in the tournament. In the eight years that the City of Johannesburg has been involved in the Carnival, it has seen a commendable decrease in crime and acts of violence on New Year’s Eve. The Joburg Carnival is fast proving to be a spectacle to be reckoned with.
This year’s carnival will end on a high note, with the City is hosting the Count-down Concert at Mary Fitzgerald Square, where the residents will welcome the New Year and celebrate diversity. The music festival will start at 6pm until the following year, and will feature various artists and DJs.
The details for the Joburg Carnival are as follows: The official procession will start at Kotze Street in Hillbrow on Monday 31 December 2012 and the time will be 11:30 for 12:00. The parade will proceed from Kotze and turn left into Klein Street, right into Wolmarans Street, right into Melle Street, left into De Korte Street, left into Bertha Street, over the Nelson Mandela Bridge, right into Carr Street, left into Miriam Makeba Street and right into Newtown Park. The carnival will end at Mary Fitzgerald Square.
