2012-12-21: Joburg carnival and New Year’s celebration to rock the City
Get ready to samba, shake your hips and feel the beat at your feet on Monday 31 December 2012 when Joburg hosts its annual carnival through the streets of the City.
Johannesburg residents can expect a flamboyant and electrifying spectacle when the City’s streets come alive with large colourful and unique floats and costumes, gigantic puppets, stilt walkers, music, dance, drama and poetry.
Participants from the City’s seven Regions are already hard at work constructing floats, refining choreography, tuning instruments and putting together glamorous costumes to make sure that each is the most attractive and loudest.
A special Orange Afcon Cup float will also be paraded as a way of welcoming all the countries that will be taking part in the tournament. “We are delighted that both the opening and closing games have been scheduled to be played in Johannesburg”, says member of the mayoral committee for Community Development councillor Chris Vondo.
The Orange Afcon Cup is being hosted by South Africa from 19 January to 10 February 2013.
The Carnival procession will start at Kotze Street in Hillbrow On Monday 31 December 2012 from 12h00.
