2012-12-24: One week until the wonder and lights of the Jozi Carnival

It's almost the end of the year, and Joburgers know where to go for the biggest, loudest, most entertaining party in town. The annual carnival heralding the end of the year rivals the likes of the famous Rio carnival. This is the ninth Joburg Carnival, and it takes place on December 31, 2012, with the theme: “Jozi lights up GDS 2040.”

Johannesburg residents can expect a flamboyant and electrifying spectacle when the city’s streets come alive with colourful and unique large costumes and floats, gigantic puppets and stilt walkers, music, dance, drama and poetry.

“Every year the Joburg Carnival gets bigger and better, and we expect nothing less for the 2012 party,” said MMC for Community Development, Councillor Chris Vondo.

The carnival is organised by the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department and it features groups from all seven regions of the City.

The children who will be taking part have been practicing and making costumes for months now, and are all hopeful of winning some of the various prizes on offer.

The Orange Afcon Cup hosted by South Africa from 19 January to 10 February 2013, is an ideal vehicle for social cohesion.

A special Orange Afcon Cup float will also be paraded as a way of welcoming all the countries that will be taking part in the tournament. “We are delighted that both the opening and closing games have been scheduled to be played in Johannesburg”, says Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Councillor Chris Vondo.

We call on all the Citizens of Johannesburg and foreign nationals residing in the City to join the carnival as we prepare for this soccer showpiece in few weeks to come.

The carnival will end on a high note, with the City hosting the count-down concert at Mary Fitzgerald Square, where the residents will welcome the New Year and celebrate diversity. The music festival will start at 6pm until the following year, and will feature various artists and DJs.

“The carnival is one of the Department’s flagship events which promote social cohesion and the unification of the City’s residents through safe vibrant and fun filled street parades and performances by all the regions of the City of Johannesburg,” say Councillor Vondo.

The carnival starts at Kotze Street and wind its way through the city as it comes to a rapturous finish in Newtown. An excellent vantage point is from the Nelson Mandela bridge. Safe parking is available in Newtown.
