21-09-2012: City of Johannesburg Environmental Practice Learnership kicks off on Friday

The City of Johannesburg and the Department of Environmental Affairs are piloting an Environmental Practice Learnership. The learnership is aimed at

addressing the environmental sector skills shortage at the local government level.

The one year-long NQF level 4 programme is a significant milestone. It provides an opportunity for the City to develop specialist skills in various areas,

including waste management related activities, water course cleaning, care and maintenance, care of public places, open areas, cultural and natural heritage

sites, maintenance of parks and sports fields and landfill operations.

Service delivery is local government’s mandate and in order to fulfill this, skills in the local government sector need be enhanced.

“This learnership is one of the ways that practically illustrate the positive workings and collaboration between the three spheres of government. In this

case, skills are developed in order to improve the City’s service delivery capacity,” said Mally Mokoena, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Group

Corporate and Shared Services.

The innovative Learnership, benefitting 87 learners, is also beneficial for other sectors such as mining, manufacturing or related industries which may pose

high environmental risks. There will be theoretical and practical component to the learnership. Theory will be conducted in the classroom and for the

practical part learners are to be placed in the City and Municipal Owned Entities.
