24-08-2012: Women shine at Golf Day
The City of Joburg's First Lady Pilisiwe Twala-Tau, congratulated women golfers who took part at the “Wellness” Golf Day tournament on Friday 24 August,
2012 as part of the women's month celebration.
“I’m very proud of women who are breaking into the male-dominated sport such as golf. I'm particularly proud that this golf tournament was for a good
cause," said Twala-Tau.
The golf tournament at the Soweto Country Club in Pimville was part of the social projects under the newly launched City of Joburg Mayoral Spousal office.
The tournament was also to raise awareness about health issues affecting women such as breast cancer and cervical cancer and healthy lifestyle amongst other
issues. It was also to get women to be exposed to golf and to be at the gathering where women can talk about issues affecting them in a relaxed environment.
Over and above playing golf and having a good time, the tournament was also to raise funds for burn survivors.
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and Right To Care were some of the city’ partners in the event who were on site giving health education,
conducting cervical screening, HIV/Aids counselling and testing among other health services.
Mado Masia, who is the convener of the ladies section at Soweto Country Club and had taken part at the tournament, encouraged women to take part in sport.
“I find golf to be a very relaxing game. This is where people can form friendships on the golf course and also sharpen their skill," said Masia.
Most women said they played golf for the love of the game, for relaxation and for forming new friendships.
The first position went to T Moremang and T Molefe who both scored 43 points, followed closely by Bushi Modise and Mado Masia who scored 42 points in their
partnership. The third spot was taken by Tshepo Chocho and E Matshego who put out a good fight by scoring 40 points.
The Spousal office was recently launched at the beginning of this month at the Soweto Theatre. The office supports various social projects aimed at
uplifting and making a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable members of the community within the City of Joburg. Some of these projects include
focusing on: women empowerment, education for youths and child development, addressing the needs of orphans and vulnerable children, support and integration
of burn survivors, sport and recreation for social change amongst others.
The proceeds from the event will go to support various NGOs such as the National Burn Association of South Africa (NBASA).
