26-10-2012: Unified Public School named 2012 Story Skirmish winners

The closely contested City of Johannesburg’s Library and Information Services (LIS) Story Skirmish competition has been won by Unified Public School.

Only four schools out of 188 schools made it to the finals, namely the reigning champs, Unified, followed by Education Alive which came second, then third Basa and lastly St George.

The Maraisburg School which had only six-girl-members side trumped their biggest rival, Education Alive, at the emotionally charged finals of the completion held at Davidsonville Library on 24 October 2012.

The Story Skirmish competition, which is growing with its popularity every year, is an annual inter-school knock out quiz for learners in Grades 4 and 5. It is intended to reinforce the reading culture in children by encouraging them to read for fun. The quiz questions, which are set by librarians, are based on the books on the competition list.

The books are chosen by librarians, they are specially selected to be easy to read and enjoyable for children. The librarians who choose the books ensure that at least half of the titles are African and South African to build up an appreciation of indigenous literature.

Schools are allowed to choose six team members with two members serving as reserves. Between them they must read 15 titles on which the quiz is based.

The competitions begin early in the year with schools entering the competition and thereafter there are elimination stages. These bright minds will be officially honoured during the prize giving ceremony on 31 October 2012 at the Johannesburg Theatre in Braamfontein.
