06-02-2013: City of Joburg to tighten access to the National Stadium for the AFCON final
The City of Johannesburg is to tighten motorist access to the National Stadium for the AFCON Final on 10 February.
With thousands of fans expected to descend upon the stadium for the finals, the City is urging football revellers to get their tickets early and to make the necessary transport arrangements for easy access to the stadium and to avoid congestion.
“We experienced with the opening ceremony that the public were not certain on how to make use of the transport options provided”, says City spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane “We therefore urge the public take some time to understand the transport system so as to avoid frustration and congestion at the stadium”.
Park and Ride facilities will be open four hours before the start of the closing ceremony. Once parked, spectators can walk from a Park and Ride facility to the nearest Rea Vaya station to catch a bus. Buses will leave the station for the stadium every 10 minutes to ensure that spectators are ferried to the stadium as quickly as possible. Buses will also operate after the game until all fans have been taken to their vehicles and the Park and Ride facilities will remain open until all cars have left.
Location of Park and Ride Facilities
- Constitutional Hill Joubert Street: R30.00 tickets sold at Conhill Rea Vaya Station
- Metro Centre and Thuso House, Braamfontein – R30.00 tickets sold at Joburg Theatre Station.
- Westgate: R30.00 tickets sold at Westgate Rea Vaya Station
NB: NO VEHICLE WITHOUT AN OFFICIAL “VEHICLE ACCESS POINT PERMIT” WILL BE ALLOWED NEAR THE STADIUM PRECINCT.
“We noted during the opening ceremony that spectators would just drive towards the stadium without any necessary permits. This created unnecessary congestion and will not be tolerated this time around”, explained Nthatisi Modingoane.
Spectators are urged to carefully plan their journey to the stadium and leave early to avoid congestion. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TICKET, ACCREDITATION AND VEHICLE ACCESS PERMIT – DO NOT DRIVE TOWARDS THE NATIONAL STADIUM PRECINT!
For Park and Walk, spectators are encouraged to pre-book by buying tickets at any Computicket outlet. The tickets for the Park and Walk are sold at R50 per Sedan, R100 per Minibus taxi and R400 per Bus. Law enforcement agencies will be strict and will not allow any motorists without vehicle access permits anywhere near the stadium.
