08-05-2013: Meter reading awareness
City Power is urging customers not to open their homes to people who come to their homes masquerading as City Power meter readers.
This follows an incident which took place yesterday afternoon in Westdene where criminals posing as City Power meter readers, robbed customers of their belongings after entering their home.
“We want to advise customers not to open their homes to people who come to their homes masquerading as City Power meter readers” said Sol Masolo, spokesman for City Power.
Our meter readings are carried out by contractors appointed by City Power. These contractors can be identified by means of identification cards. “Customers should ensure that they request anyone saying is a meter reader to provide them with valid identification before granting them access to their premises” explained Masolo.
HOW TO IDENTIFY CITY POWER METER READERS:
They will present a City Power ID card
The card will display a photo and the staff number of the meter reader
City Power is working with law enforcement agencies to bring these criminals to book.
If not sure of the person asking access to your property, please verify credentials with City Power’s Security Control Centre: (011) 490 7553 or (011) 490 7911.
