05-12-2014: Eskom Loadshedding
Eskom has requested the City of Johannesburg and all other municipalities across the country to reduce demand by load shedding their customers for the next two days starting today, Friday the 5th of December, Saturday the 6th ending Sunday the 7th December 2014.
In its statement, the utility stated that its electricity systems will be under severe strain for the next two days and that, is because of this pressure, it will be necessary to load shed the City and the country.
In our effort to reduce the impact of load shedding on the city of Johannesburg, City Power will remotely switch off the geyser control systems to certain areas at specific times to manage the electricity load across the city. We also appeal to Large Power Users and Key Business Customers to reduce their usage of electricity by switching off all non-essential machinery, and other appliances such as air conditioners and lighting.
City Power also requests domestic customers and medium and small enterprises to reduce their electricity consumption by switching off of non-essential appliances such as office and basement lights, where possible.
We urge our customers, both business and domestic, to prepare themselves for this load shedding through the following measures.
Visit the City Power website at www.citypower.co.za to confirm when your area will be load shed
Have a torch(es) or lantern(s) to light up the house and ensure that you have an adequate supply of batteries, preferably rechargeable, on hand
Have candles and other alternative lighting systems available, where possible
Ensure your security system has appropriate battery back-up
If possible find where you get a meal/refreshments for your family before your area is load shed
It may be advisable to be indoors at night when your home is experiencing load shedding as no outdoor lighting will be possible
City Power will continue to update customers about this load shedding through the media and through both the City Power and the City of Johannesburg’s twitter accounts which are @CityPowerJhb and @CityofJoburgZA .
It is therefore advisable for customers to continue following media reports and these twitter accounts for regular updates during the load shedding period.
