06-11-2014: City of Joburg to launch a new integrated mixed income housing development
The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Clr Parks Tau will launch an Integrated Mixed Housing Development on Tuesday, 11 November 2014 in South Hills, Moffat view Ext 4, Johannesburg. A first of its kind housing development to be built within 7km close proximity to the Johannesburg CBD.
South Hills Housing Development forms a partnership between the City of Johannesburg, Standard Bank, CALGRO M3 and the Community; it is targeted at reducing housing backlog within the Inner City and surrounding areas. The project will deliver 5 226 residential housing opportunities.
This housing development will be inclusive of all everyone, cut crosses every class and from every background, it will and bring together communities, breaking the barriers of Apartheid that had separated people according to their racial orientation. It will also address the City’s goal of “Stitching the City together through integration.
The development boasts four typologies of housing consisting of fully subsidised houses (RDP), rental & social housing stock, bonded units and freehold affordable housing. It is also set to foster social cohesion by providing housing for the poor, affordable housing and low income households, fully bonded houses for middle-to-high income groups, incorporating densification in a prime area closer to economic opportunities and transport nodes.
The Executive Mayor will announce two new exciting approaches and opportunities – land/stands sale directly to the communities and a new trend where communities will build for themselves through cooperatives. The Executive Mayor will also perform a symbolic gesture for unveiling the project by driving a construction grader on site.
