​07-08-2014: Powerhouse performers for the opening night celebration of the new-look Standard Bank Joy of Jazz


The 15th Standard Bank Joy of Jazz opening night will see some of the world’s top jazz performers providing spectacular sounds in the festival’s new locale.
Taking to the Dinaledi Stage at the Sandton Convention Centre on Thursday, September 25, are some of the world’s powerhouse female vocalists including the legendary Dianne Reeves, four-time Grammy Award winner, and South Africa’s first lady of song Sibongile Khumalo.

There’s also Ann Hampton Callaway, regarded as one of the leading champions of the great American Songbook and known for writing and singing the theme to the TV series The Nanny as well as this year’s Grammy Award winner for best jazz vocal Gregory Porter.

Khumalo will be joined on stage by three other award-winning vocalists Gloria Bosman, Melanie Scholtz and Tutu Puoane. They are all former Standard Bank Young Artist winners.

The spectacular line-up is as follows:

 20h15: Jazz Divas – Gloria Bosman, Melanie Scholtz, Sibongile Khumalo and Tutu Puoane
 21h45: Dianne Reeves
 23h00: Gregory Porter

The 2014 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz is produced by T-Musicman and brought to audiences by Standard Bank in association with the Department of Arts & Culture; the City of Joburg, Gauteng Province and South African Tourism.

ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY

Ann Hampton Callaway is a multiplatinum-selling singer, composer, lyricist, pianist, and actress best known for writing and singing the theme to the TV series The Nanny, writing songs for Barbra Streisand and starring in the Broadway musical Swing! for which she received a Tony nomination. Last year Hampton Callaway debuted her latest symphony show The Streisand Songbook with The Boston Pops.

DIANNE REEVES

American jazz singer and four-time Grammy Award winner Dianne Reeves is among the pre-eminent jazz vocalists in the world. She is known for her live performances as much as her albums.

GLORIA BOSMAN

Gloria Bosman - who has headlined many concerts in this country - is a former 2000 Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year and is a multiple SAMA Award sinner.

GREGORY PORTER

American jazz vocalist Gregory Porter will come to South Africa as the 2014 Grammy Award winner for Best Jazz Vocal Album for his recording Liquid Spirit. He has been called “The brilliant new voice of jazz.”

MELANIE SCHOLTZ

Melanie has collaborated with many South African and international jazz artists. She has received numerous awards. In 2013, Melanie launched Freedom’s Child, a collaborative project with iconic poet James Matthews, marrying poetry and jazz. She also released Our Time.

SIBONGILE KHUMALO

Sibongile Khumalo has been described interchangeably as South Africa’s ‘first lady of song’ and ‘the Empress of Song’. She is the most celebrated member of a musical dynasty, marked by an extraordinary vocal gene-pool and passion for making music. She has been lauded as one of the great singing talents of her time, and has inspired the creation of new music by South African composers, both in the classical art song as well as jazz genres.

TUTU PUOANE

Tutu Puoane was the recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year Award for Music. She has performed extensively in South Africa with many great South African musicians. Tutu leads her own quartet and is a guest vocalist for the great Brussels Jazz Orchestra, with which she recently released an album in honour of Miriam Makeba, called Mama Africa.
