17-10-2014: Joburg Gems & Joburg Tourism All Set to Tee Off in Italy
The Joburg Gems collective will be heading off to Italy to showcase Johannesburg as a golfing destination to the golf travel community at the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM). The exhibition takes place in Lake Como between the 27th to 30th October, where over 600 golf tourism suppliers join 350 pre-qualified buyers and 100 international press for four days of pre-scheduled appointments, networking opportunities and industry updates.
This will be the fourth year that Joburg Tourism, together with the members of Joburg Gems (The Fairway Hotel & Golf Resort, Randpark Golf Club, Royal Jhb & Kensington Golf Club and Bryanston Country Club) join forces to exhibit at IGTM. The main purpose of attending this annual worldwide golf tourism trade show is to create a demand for golf tour operators to package in Johannesburg to their golfing itineraries to South Africa.
With Johannesburg as the main gateway into South Africa, a night or two with a few rounds of golf in the beautiful city either at the beginning or end of the trip, combined with cultural experiences is starting to grow in popularity.
This marketing initiative together with other strategically identified promotions are yielding positive results with tour operators sending their golfing groups to Johannesburg especially from countries in Africa, UK, Switzerland and Germany.
“This is a great private and public sector collaboration and we’re thrilled to be part of this initiative which has seen the brand growing in strength thanks to the power of joint marketing,” says Rendani Khorommbi, Visitor Services Bureau Manager, Joburg Tourism.
“It’s also a prime opportunity to promote the City of Johannesburg’s flagship golfing event, the Joburg Open,” emphasises Khorommbi. “Co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour, this is the City’s flagship project which has over the years received a return on investment in excess of 800 million. Under the leadership of the City of Johannesburg’s current Executive Mayor, Clr Mpho Parks Tau, the tournament has seen growth in size and stature, with the tournament’s relationship as a qualifier for the British Open (commonly known as The Open), signifying this. The tournament is broadcast through live coverage and delayed highlights to more than fifty three (53) countries worldwide. It’s also one of the world’s biggest tournaments boasting two fields - the East and the West courses. 2015 will mark the ninth season of the Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club.”
Paul Leishman, General Manager of Bryanston Country Club attended the show last year on behalf of Joburg Gems and commented:
“I was extremely impressed at the professionalism of the show and the potential it has to showcase Johannesburg as a great golfing destination. South Africa and Joburg in particular is a great value destination. Our continued attendance at this show will ensure we re-inforce Joburg as a reliable and exciting destination.”
We look forward to meeting golf tour operators at the Joburg Tourism booth on the South African Pavilion stand number R235. For more information on IGTM visit www.igtm.co.uk. For more information on Joburg Gems contact Natalie van Blerk on natalie@joburggems.com
