18-08-2014: MSD South Africa and the City of Johannesburg support the National Family Planning Campaign which was launched by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi in February 2014.

On 27 February, the Department of Health (DoH) launched a new sub-dermal contraceptive device which is inserted just underneath the skin on the upper inner arm of the woman and can be effective for a period of three years.

Many nurses across the public health facilities have been trained and are now able to insert the implant without a doctor’s assistance. City of Johannesburg Metropolitan wants to ensure that all its city clinics have trained nurses who can insert the sub-dermal implant. This requires a competency which can only be achieved through proper training.

MSD South Africa supports the City of Joburg and has provided them with training material and expertise to enable the City to achieve its goal. Family planning has an impact on the wellbeing of the women of Johannesburg.

Managing Director for MSD South Africa Kaja Natland said “MSD is committed to contributing to the health of all South Africans. Family planning is very important for the whole nation and women now have a choice of contraceptive to suit their needs. MSD is honoured to be a part of this campaign”

“City of Joburg would like to thank MSD for the training materials which will empower the nurses in our clinics to confidently insert the sub-dermal implant into any woman who wants it free of charge.” said Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Councilor Nonceba Molwele

City of Johannesburg Metropolitan has 80 clinics spread across the city. The women of Joburg can access free family planning services regardless of their Socio status. A woman is the cornerstone of the family. Her health and wellbeing is vital to the entire nation and the City of Joburg is doing its bit to ensure a healthy nation.
