28-05-2014: Basketball tournament show-down in Soweto
The City of Joburg's Community Development department in support of the Friends of Mpho Moremi; will host the Basketball Memorial Tournament on 31 May 2014 at the Moletsane Sport Complex in Soweto.
The tournament is the brainchild of the young people of Soweto, who all loved and endeared the late Mpho Moremi. Mpho was a very athletic individual who was passionate about basketball and had traveled to the US where he met his basketball icon Michael Jordan. He passed away this year and the tournament seeks to honour his memory by reviving basketball in Soweto.
The key intent is to mobilize the community to participate in this elite sporting code thus promoting healthy lifestyle and social cohesion. The tournament promotes young people from previously disadvantaged communities to enter competitive and professional elite sport. Basketball is amongst the elite sport and the platform to expose it to as many young people as possible in Soweto is necessary.
